The Girl from Plainville Episode 4 Ending: Does Michelle Go to Prison?

Conrad’s father’s emotional turmoil is also depicted in Episode 4 following his son’s death. He decides to sell the truck in which Conrad was discovered dead, but his own father intervenes. In a flashback, we learn that Conrad’s grandfather gave him the truck. As the episode comes to a close, Katie Rayburn learns that Conrad and his father had a physical argument a few months before the latter died. The prosecutor is concerned that this may compromise her case. However, she is successful in obtaining the indictment, and episode 4 concludes with Michelle being arrested and her portrait being taken for record-keeping purposes.

Michelle’s situation soon deteriorates in episode 4. She has so far used Conrad’s death to gain sympathy (and perhaps a little popularity), but she now faces the possibility of being charged in connection with his death. Perhaps the most concerning evidence are that Michelle’s attorney, Joseph Cataldo, isn’t optimistic about Michelle’s chances of escaping the probe undamaged. He makes a remark about how serious a prosecutor Katie Rayburn is, and Michelle is shortly indicted.

The case against Michelle is based primarily on a text message she sent to her friend Natalie, in which she says she (Michelle) asked Conrad to go back into the truck, which was rapidly filling up with carbon monoxide, thereby encouraging him to carry out his suicide plot. The prosecution will certainly view this as an admission of guilt, while Michelle’s defense will most likely try to show that it was an assisted suicide case (which is legal in the state of Massachusetts). Michelle has been indicted, which means she has a case against her and will have to go to trial. It doesn’t imply she’ll go to prison for sure; whether she’ll go to prison depends on whether she’s found guilty of manslaughter (the crime she is charged with). For the time being, her fate is up in the air.

Is Conrad Going to California?

Conrad experiences a rare moment of joy when his grandfather presents him with a truck. This seemed to lift the young man’s emotions and provide him with hope for a new life. Conrad is now considering fleeing to California in his newly purchased truck, as evidenced by his subsequent text exchange with Michelle, a plan that Michelle heartily endorses. Following is a description of an idyllic existence the two could potentially enjoy in California, with Conrad on the cusp of receiving his Captain’s License and a job and Michelle promising to get one as soon as she can so they can purchase their dream house, have children, and grow old together.

Perhaps most striking is Michelle’s and Conrad’s desire to make “new pals” in California, demonstrating how they both feel out of place in their hometowns. This is also visible in the way Michelle’s greatest friend, Susie, pushes her away, but Conrad doesn’t appear to have any close friends other than Rob. The plot to run away together ultimately fails, and it appears that Conrad will not travel to California alone.
