The Dropout Episode 8 Recap

The eighth episode, which is the final episode of ‘The Dropout,’ is titled ‘Lizzy.’ It starts soon after John Carreyrou’s expose of Theranos went popular in the media and among the general public. Elizabeth goes into crisis mode and consults her whole board of directors. Carreyrou’s piece, she claims, is full of lies, and he is a sexist reporter. Sunny Balwani, on the other hand, is working to keep Walgreens from terminating its contract with Theranos. The fact that no fellows of Theranos’ board of directors have resigned enrages Carreyrou, who continues to support Elizabeth. Judith Baker, Carreyrou’s editor, pushes him to keep writing about Theranos. She offers he tries to persuade Tyler Shultz to publicly criticize Theranos.

Meanwhile, Erika Cheung and Tyler filed a complaint with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about Theranos’ lab problems (CMS). Tyler later contacts his grandfather, George Shultz, and requests that he speak out against Elizabeth and Theranos. Tyler, on the other hand, leaves when George begs him to, resulting in a shattered relationship. A CMS employee, Gary Yamamoto, arrives to check the Theranos labs. Sunny attempts to talk to Gary and influence the situation in Theranos’ favour, but Gary completes his report.

The report has been made public, and Theranos’ operations have been halted. Sunny is blamed for the failure, and Elizabeth asks him to resign as COO. Sunny, on the other hand, suggests that they relaunch Theranos with a new product and bring the company back to profitability. Despite this, Elizabeth informs the board of directors that Sunny is resigning behind Sunny’s back. Sunny and Elizabeth eventually end their relationship. The Dropout Finale Ending: Is Theranos Shut Down?

Near the end of the episode, the CMS report is released, and Elizabeth seeks to minimize the damage by giving a lengthy media interview. However, Elizabeth’s efforts are ultimately futile, and one of her laboratories is shut down by the CMS. Elizabeth wants to re-establish the corporation under new management, so there is yet hope. She mentions the same thing in a 2017 deposition. Despite this, Theranos’ time is running out, and the company is on the edge of bankruptcy. In the final part of the show, we see Elizabeth in an empty Theranos office, implying that the company has shut down.

In reality, Elizabeth’s company, Theranos, was shut down in 2018, just a few years after we last saw her on the show. By December 2017, Theranos was on the verge of going bankrupt and was only saved for a short time thanks to a loan from Softbank Group. In April 2018, the majority of the company’s employees were laid off, and the company’s operations were officially ended on September 4, 2018, when no new investors expressed interest in purchasing it. Therranos’ demise is considered a cautionary tale in Silicon Valley, as it serves as a sombre reminder of the startup culture’s hardships and disillusionment.

What Happens to Elizabeth Holmes?

Elizabeth Holmes is dating Billy Evans, according to the show’s last act. She, on the other hand, has resigned as CEO of Theranos and is the subject of a fraud investigation. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is happy with her life and believes she has not made any mistakes. In reality, Elizabeth was accused of the same thing by the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States (SEC). As part of the settlement, Elizabeth paid a $500,000 fine and forfeited 19 million shares of company stock. For the next ten years, Elizabeth is also barred from assuming a senior role in any publicly traded firm. The same is hinted at during Elizabeth’s final conversation with her old lawyer, Linda Tanner, in the program.

In this episode, Linda warns Elizabeth that if she is found guilty of the allegations against her, then she could face up to 20 years in prison, a foreshadowing of Elizabeth’s federal trial. In actuality, Elizabeth’s trial began in August 2021 and finished in January 2022. She was charged with four charges of misrepresenting investors, three counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to the episode, her sentence is planned for September 2022, and she might face up to 20 years in prison. Despite this, Elizabeth Holmes is still wedded to Billy Evans, and the two are claimed to have married in 2019. They have a son together and reside in San Francisco.
