Lawrence William McNabney was quite a well-known and wealthy attorney in Nevada before shifting his company to Sacramento, California. The 52-year-old was a well-known legal figure as well as a quarter horse enthusiast. Larry, on the other hand, had his problems; he struggled with drinking. Elisa Barasch was a wealthy lawyer who had been married four times and had three children when he met her. When they married in 1996, she worked at Larry’s law firm.

On September 10, 2001, Larry and Elisa were at a horse show in Los Angeles County, California. According to witnesses, Larry left early, claiming to be sick. At the time, he was seen in a wheelchair, and Elisa was seen carrying him away that day. Larry could not be found after that; therefore, a legal company employee filed a missing person report on November 30, 2001.

After Larry’s son filed a follow-up report about a month later, the inquiry was initiated. On February 5, 2002, a vineyard worker in San Joaquin County spotted a limb protruding out of a shallow grave and reported it to authorities. Larry’s body was decomposing, and he had clearly been dead for some time. According to the postmortem, he had been poisoned with acepromazine, a horse tranquilizer.

After Larry’s last appearance at the horse show, Larry McNabney’s legal company in Sacramento went back to business as normal. Despite the rigid fact that he never showed up, Elisa continued to negotiate with lawyers. She seemed to have a few different explanations for where Larry was: rehab, a Costa Rica trip, or cult membership. However, towards the end of November, one of the new employees had grown suspicious after not seeing Larry and had reported him missing to the police.

The investigation began when Larry’s son submitted a second missing person report. After officials were unable to contact her, Elisa was last seen leaving Sacramento in her luxury automobile on January 11, 2002, after closing down the office. The investigators finally found Larry’s horse trailer, which contained Elisa’s belongings. Because no social security number or driver’s license could be discovered in their files, they already knew Elisa was a fictional name.

In the trailer, the cops discovered proof of Elisa’s various names over the years. In reality, she was a con artist wanted in Florida and Washington for credit card theft. Elisa had a rap sheet that extended several pages and contained at least 38 distinct aliases. Elisa’s real name was Laren Sims, and she spent most of her life scamming others. Authorities were able to track Laren down to Destin, Florida, in March 2002. She was working two part-time jobs, dating, and going by the name Shane Ivaroni at the time.

According to detectives, Laren had liquidated all of Larry’s assets in the time since he was last seen. It didn’t take long for the real story to emerge after her arrest. Sarah Dutra, the law firm’s teenage legal secretary, was implicated in Laren’s three-page confession. According to Laren, Sarah was allegedly involved in poisoning Larry’s water with a lethal dose of horse tranquilizer. Over time, Sarah had been a regular at the horse competitions that Larry and Laren attended, and the two ladies had become close friends.

Laren then claimed to have taken the bones to Yosemite National Park in California to be buried. Sarah began digging a hole, but because Larry was still alive, she claims they abandoned the plan. They even went to Las Vegas, Nevada, to party and look for a burial spot for Larry. His body was eventually sent to his home in Lodi, California, where it was preserved in the garage refrigerator.

Larry stayed in there for about a month while Laren went about her work and maintained her pretense. In December 2001, she hid his body on a farm in San Joaquin County before fleeing in January 2002. Laren committed suicide while awaiting extradition from Florida weeks after her arrest; therefore, she was never brought to justice. Sarah received the highest sentence possible after being found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and accessory to murder in April 2003.
