Screenwriters David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes adapted the story from Bruce Porter’s 1993 book “Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medelln Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All.” The film follows the life of George Jung, one of the most well-known figures in the cocaine business during the 1970s and 1980s, who teamed up with Carlos Lehder Rivas to smuggle large quantities of cocaine for Pablo Escobar’s powerful Colombian cartel, the Medellin Cartel, and made a fortune doing so.

When Demme’s friend Denis Leary, who is also a co-producer, told him about Porter’s book in the early 1990s, he became captivated by George Jung’s biography. “At first, the plot was a traditional tale of a young man wanting to find the American dream,” Demme told the BBC, “based on what he thought the American ideal was and was told it was going to be.” “Jung – who embodied many of America’s ideals – was also intriguing because of his role in the drug trade.”

Then he’d tell us these awful stories about his kid not wanting to see him, and we’d cry.”

The titular drug lord in ‘Blow’ loses everything in the end and only wants his family back. While Jung does get to see the bright side of life as a wealthy crook in the film, he ends up a broken man who is unable to visit his dying father and aches for a daughter who refuses to have anything to do with him.

Jung is played by Johnny Depp, and Diego Delgado, played by Jordi Mollà, is based on Carlos. While filming his portrayal of Jung, Johnny Depp also paid a visit to Jung. He spent two days with George Jung and was blown away by his charisma and flare, which previously propelled him to the top of the drug cartel, as well as his admission of wrongdoings.
