It portrays the story of former NFL star Michael Ohel’s childhood, his interaction with the Tuohy family, and how that transformed everyone’s life. Michael had a difficult upbringing. Michael’s mother was a drug addict, and his father was nowhere to be found.

Michael enrolls in a private Christian school with the support of a friend’s father but fails academically. He is finally taken in by the Tuohys, who assist him in becoming the man he was always intended to be. Michael, in turn, brings his adoptive family closer together. Aside from the primary actors, ‘The Blind Side’ contains a slew of supporting characters to keep the story moving. Coach Cotton (Ray McKinnon), who is Michael’s high school football coach, and Miss Sue (Kathy Bates), his private teacher, are among them. This is all you need to know if you’re wondering if these characters are based on real individuals.

Cotton is based on real-life football coach Hugh Freeze, who had a huge impact on Michael’s development as a football player. Wingate Christian is a made-up institution. After being told they couldn’t use the name of Briarcrest Christian School, which Michael actually attended, the producers came up with that name.

Freeze kick-started his coaching career at Briarcrest in the year 1992 and was promoted to head coach in 1995. He stayed at Memphis High School until 2004. In 2005, he joined the University of Mississippi or Ole Miss as an associate athletic director for external football affairs. Michael signed his letter of intent to attend Ole Miss shortly after Freeze acquired this position. When the NCAA examined Michael, this apparently sparked some controversy.

The NCAA eventually determined that Ole Miss did not break any rules in recruiting Michael, but Freeze was found guilty of reaching out to Memphis-area recruits before his job with Ole Miss was completed. Freeze was named head coach at Ole Miss in December 2011. He was a part of the group until 2016 when he quit in the wake of allegations of recruiting violations and controversies involving a female escort business. Freeze has been the head coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, since 2019.

Is Miss Sue a Real Person?

Are Coach Cotton And Miss Sue From The Blind Side Based On Real People? Yes, Miss Sue is a real person. Sue Mitchell is her full name. The majority of what is depicted in the film about her is accurate. Michael’s grades needed to improve in order for him to enter the college of his choosing, so the Tuohys recruited her to assist him. Leigh Sue and Anne met at a sorority event. The latter had more than three decades of experience teaching in Memphis public schools. She is, as the film depicts, a liberal. Sue put Michael through a rigorous regimen in order to improve his grades. They were also successful. In his final year, he received As and Bs, but it wasn’t enough to compensate for his bad performance. Sean Tuohy eventually found a solution to their difficulty in Brigham Young University’s online classes.
