Who Killed Jesse Lee Richards?

Surveillance footage from a local business initially revealed two young men in the area who were suspected of being persons of interest. When Jesse was shot to death, he had left work and was waiting for a bus to return home. Witness’ true statements led to the arrest of two men in April 2016: Daniel Jeremy Torres Jr and David Alexander Zuniga. They typically began to build a case against the two after that because they were half-brothers.

When David was arrested in April 2016, he was only 17 years old. During interrogation, he acknowledged planning a heist to obtain money so that his other brother, Juan Torres, could pay his rent and utilities. He was accompanied by Daniel, and the two of them set off with a rifle. During the interview, David acknowledged being the one who pulled the trigger on Jesse during a botched heist. Daniel admitted to being at the crime site but denied any involvement in the murder.

During the trial, however, things drastically shifted. When David was on trial, he testified in his own defense, alleging that Daniel was the one who shot Jesse. David then went on to say that he would assume responsibility for the shooting because he was afraid of Daniel. He said that if he told the authorities about who killed Jesse, Daniel would kill him and their mother. This contradicted David’s original police statement, in which he stated at least twice that he shot Jesse.

Juan, the third brother, also testified that Daniel and David took his.32-caliber revolver with them as they left the house. He claimed to have seen the incident and stated Daniel opened fire while David was sitting next to Jesse. Juan also alleged that Daniel had intimidated him and that he was originally afraid to discuss the murder. Later in Daniel’s trial, David repeated his testimony, but the defense attempted to cast doubt on his changing statements and questioned Juan’s testimony.
