Despite Jed's attempts to start the chainsaw, he retreats while inspecting Heather's chest mark. Burt and his associate capture Leatherface from behind as Jed is liberating Heather. They bind him to a massive grater, and Heather flees the scene, only to return later to save cousin Jed. Leatherface is shown in the film as a tortured anti-hero who, with the help of Heather, gives the mayor a taste of his own medicine. Jed quickly slices Burt's legs off at the machine's mouth, and the remainder of his body falls on the grater's teeth. Burt Hartman passes away on the set. Sheriff Hooper, remembering a previous horror, turns a blind eye to the death.
